What is a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast?
A Sri Lankan breakfast is built around rice and coconut. Kiribath is rice cooked in thick coconut milk and cut into diamonds, eaten with lunu miris or a piece of jaggery. Pol roti is a flatbread of flour and grated coconut cooked on a hot plate. Pittu is rice flour and coconut steamed in a cylinder, crumbly and best with coconut milk. Kadala is chickpeas tempered with onion, chilli and curry leaves.
Hoppers and string hoppers belong to the same table, and a spiced chicken such as kukul mas mirisata turns it into a full meal. It is the breakfast of a Sunday morning, a poya day and the first day of the year.
